This variety, also known as 'Yellow Newtown' among countless other aliases, might also be the same variety as Albemarle Pippen, but there still remains doubt about that as well. What we do know about the variety is it's had some great staying power in its 300 year history on the continent, and for good reason. This variety is very adaptable, growing well in nearly any climate suitable for apple production in the US. And nobody would have tried to grow this apple in all over these geographic areas if not for the quality of the fruit which is quite high - and able to be used in a variety of ways. Notoriously slow to bear, we're still waiting our first harvest of this legendary American cultivar.
