Ashmead's Kernal
Place of Origin: Gloucester, England
Year: 1700
Parentage: Chance seedling
Uses: Exceptional Eating Apple, Cider
History at Three Springs: Planted for Ploughman Cider in 2014
Simply put, one of the finest eating apples that I've encountered. Sweetness, acidity, high aromatics, some spice - it's just intoxicating by my standards. A great orchard performer as well, it also adds a wonderful aroma when used as a sweet/sharp in cidermaking. It's texture is consistent with other russetted varieties but sometimes lacks what fans of modern dessert apples desire. But, I'm begging, do not let that take away from the complex and robust flavor of this apple!
