Macoun

Place of Origin:  Geneva, NY - Agricultural Experiment Station

Year: 1912, introduced in 1923

Parentage:  McIntosh' x 'Jersey Black'

Uses:  Eating, Baking, Sauce

History at Three Springs: Planted for market in 2010

Like so many "New York varieties", Macoun isn't a hand-in-glove fit for South Central Pennsylvania with its long, hot summers. However, among apple afficienados who hail from this region, Macoun outclasses similar varieties like Empire and McIntosh and it's not hard for me to see why. Even in years where the fruit doesn't ripen evenly, we tend to pick up more complexity in Macoun than other comparable varieties.
